When you're trying to remember something, you find yourself staring off into the void? Perhaps your eyes are looking up to the right or straight down at your feet. Maybe they travel around a while, until - "oh yes, now I remember!" This mechanism is what is behind this treatment method of "Brainspotting". You've found a spot in your visual field that allowed all the right synapses to connect in just the right way to access the information that your brain needed.
When we have unresolved trauma or unprocessed issues, those can get stuck in a similar fashion to the above mentioned elusive memory example. In Brainspotting, your therapist will work with you to find the "spot" that helps unlock what's stuck and truly process it out in a way you haven't been able to do before.
David Grand created Brainspotting, evolving it out of his training in EMDR. This video is a short (less than 4 minutes) introduction to how it works.
